SAGE-FEMMERésumé : The two studies led by Nickie van der Wulp, Ciska Hoving and Hein de Vries, under scrutiny in this issue, aim to explore the advice midwives give and the information pregnant women and their partners receive about alcohol consumption in pregnancy in the Netherlands. Being given the potentially disastrous effects of alcohol consumption in pregnancy summed up by Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, it is vital midwives’ training be improved, partners involved and general social awareness be raised, though contrary to smoking, occasional alcohol intake may often be misperceived as relatively harmless. These studies also incidentally underline the different conceptions of midwifery existing between countries. This paper by Jeni Stevens, Virginia Schmied et al. is precisely about the challenges and benefits of this practice involving a parent and their baby. SAGE-FEMMERésumé : This article discusses the maternity organisation of care, women’s choice of mode of birth and a global trend in reducing “normality” of childbirth due to an everincreasing recourse to technological assistance or medical procedures, best illustrated by the fast growing number of c-sections in large parts of the Western World. A worldwide overview of vaginal birth and caesarean section rates as indicators of normality (and lack of it) is also presented. In conclusion, the importance of sharing good practice among countries with particular attention to social location of midwifery, mobilisation of consumer groups as well as education of maternity healthcare professionals and women, in facilitation of an effective informed choice, is highlighted.
