SAGE-FEMMERésumé : Today's paper scrutinises how the operations of risk management help to constitute midwives’ understandings of childbirth in a particular way. Drawing from rich ethnographic data, collected in South East England, this survey presents empirical evidence to critically explore how institutional concerns around risk and risk management impact upon the way midwives can legitimately imagine and manage labour and childbirth. Through this analysis more than ever the fear factor of risk in midwifery talk and practice is shown to influence the daily practice of midwives. SAGE-FEMMERésumé : Today's second installment on our scary trip through British midwifery is yet again led by Mandie Scamell. She identifies how contemporary midwifery practice in the UK, as is the case in most Western countries, converges upon an interface between two arguably divergent care objectives. On the one hand, midwives strive to inspire a sense of confidence and well-being in the women they care for to support them to give birth spontaneously. On the other, by contrast, midwives view their practice through a lens of risk where an urgency to pay attention to the potential risks involved in childbirth prevails. SAGE-FEMMERésumé : In Australia, the midwifery workforce is ageing and predominantly part-time. Hence there is considerable interest in the induction and retention of new midwives in the profession. This study led by Dr Mary Carolan, was undertaken to explore 3rd year students’ views of the ‘good midwife’. I am sure it will be interesting to compare this Australian survey with your own expectations from a competent midwife in a French context. No doubt similarities will occur but also huge differences due to an overwhelmingly obstetric-led model in Australia, quite reminiscent of the US situation. Training is also much shorter in Australia: 3 years vs 5 in France. Permalink : https://pmb.pfps-churennes.bzh/pmb_ifsi/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id

STRESSRésumé : Limerick, which is a city in the Republic of Ireland, is famous for King John’s Castle. It also gave its name to a witty five-line rhyming kind of poem. But if we mention that place today it is simply because a survey about the global impact of lullabies on prenatal stress was conducted there. Stress during pregnancy is common and has been linked to a range of poorer maternal and infant outcomes. Treatment options are few, however, due to difficulties of diagnosis and concerns about the impact of medication on the developing fetus. Singing is an activity with stress-reducing and other benefits that may be worth exploring. Permalink : https://pmb.pfps-churennes.bzh/pmb_ifsi/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id

SAGE-FEMMERésumé : In this month's column, let us have a look at the intrauterine device (IUD), which is the most widely used reversible form of contraception in the world, though it remains underutilized in North America, South Asia, Oceania and sub-Saharan Africa. Given its long-acting properties and excellent efficacy, the IUD is also the most cost-effective reversible contraceptive method. Widespread use of the IUD beyond the manufacturer-approved time period could have a significant public health impact by decreasing the rate of unintended pregnancy at a population level. In France, professional midwives, with their new gynecological responsibilities have to keep in touch with the latest research concerning IUDs.
