The fear factor of risk, feeling guilty (Part 2) / Thierry Robin in Vocation sage-femme, n° 129 ([01/11/2017])

SAGE-FEMMERésumé : Today's second installment on our scary trip through British midwifery is yet again led by Mandie Scamell. She identifies how contemporary midwifery practice in the UK, as is the case in most Western countries, converges upon an interface between two arguably divergent care objectives. On the one hand, midwives strive to inspire a sense of confidence and well-being in the women they care for to support them to give birth spontaneously. On the other, by contrast, midwives view their practice through a lens of risk where an urgency to pay attention to the potential risks involved in childbirth prevails. HISTOIRE PROFESSIONNELLE
SAGE-FEMMERésumé : It is impossible to date exactly when the profession of midwife appeared. One can affirm, given the fact that women have been giving birth since the dawn of humanity, that midwifes have existed for a very long time. However, historians have not found evidence of the existence of the profession dating from before Greek and Roman times.
Indeed, the first references to midwifery were found on Roman and Greek writings, as well as on Egyptian papyrus that treated notions of gynecology and obstetrics. It was also mentioned later on in the Book of the Genesis 35:17, about the birth of Benjamin, son of Rachel: ‘’And when she was in her hard labor, the midwife said to her, ‘Fear not, for now you will have another son’’’.
At this time, midwifery was a blend of magic, practical know-how, psychological support and scarce theoretical notions of obstetrics. This vision of the profession lasted a very long time: midwives lacked medical knowledge and based their practice on technical experience, just like doctors at that time.Permalink : https://pmb.pfps-churennes.bzh/pmb_ifsi/opac_css/index.php?lvl=notice_display&id

CONTRACEPTION
SAGE-FEMMERésumé : In this month's column, let us have a look at the intrauterine device (IUD), which is the most widely used reversible form of contraception in the world, though it remains underutilized in North America, South Asia, Oceania and sub-Saharan Africa. Given its long-acting properties and excellent efficacy, the IUD is also the most cost-effective reversible contraceptive method. Widespread use of the IUD beyond the manufacturer-approved time period could have a significant public health impact by decreasing the rate of unintended pregnancy at a population level. In France, professional midwives, with their new gynecological responsibilities have to keep in touch with the latest research concerning IUDs.
