The use of intravenous artificial oxytocin for augmentation of labour is very common in midwifery care in Sweden. Studies have shown that it is often administered to women in labour who show no signs of dystocia. Yet there is awareness that interventions to augment labour can result in undesirable effects on the birth process. The aim of this paper written by Maria Ekelin, Judith Svensson, Susanne Evehammar, Linda J. Kvis is to examine Swedish midwives’ ambiguous views on the use of oxytocin in the context of normal labour. It fuels the ongoing debate bearing on the growing medicalization of childbirth. |
